Bill Lawrence, the creator of “Scrubs” and a writer for “Ted Lasso,” will receive the Herb Sargent Award for Comedy Excellence from the Writers Guild of America East (WGAE). The award will be presented during the 77th annual WGA Awards on February 15, 2025, in New York City. This event coincides with the WGA West’s ceremony in Los Angeles.
The Herb Sargent Award honors the legacy of the late Herb Sargent, a prominent writer and producer known for his work on “Saturday Night Live.” The award recognizes writers who demonstrate Sargent’s spirit, commitment, and comedic talent, as well as his dedication to mentoring emerging writers.
Previous winners of this award include notable figures such as Judd Apatow, Tina Fey, and Lorne Michaels.
Lawrence has been a member of the WGA since 1991. His career began with a writing position on the short-lived series “Billy,” followed by work on the first season of “Friends.” He is widely recognized for creating “Scrubs” and co-creating popular shows like “Ted Lasso,” “Spin City,” and “Cougar Town.” Currently, he is involved in several projects, including Apple TV+ comedies “Shrinking” and “Bad Monkey,” as well as an untitled series featuring Steve Carell.
Lisa Takeuchi Cullen, president of WGAE, praised Lawrence for his mentorship and influence on many writers. She recalled meeting him at a training program where he shared his insights with honesty and humor. Cullen expressed excitement about presenting him with this prestigious award.
In response to the honor, Lawrence stated that he feels privileged to join the ranks of past recipients and humorously noted his hope that people still consider him youthful.
