The New York City premiere of Cameron Diaz’s upcoming film, “Back in Action,” has been canceled due to the devastating wildfires in Los Angeles. The event was scheduled for Thursday night but was called off in light of the ongoing crisis.
In a statement released Wednesday night, Netflix expressed its condolences, saying, “Due to the tragic fires, we will be canceling our ‘Back in Action’ New York City premiere. We recognize many in our industry and their loved ones are currently affected, and our thoughts are with them at this time. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your understanding.”
“Back in Action” marks Diaz’s return to acting after an 11-year break. She stars alongside Jamie Foxx, her co-star from “Annie.” The film features Diaz and Foxx as Emily and Matt, a retired CIA couple who are thrust back into action when their cover is compromised.
The cancellation of the premiere is one of the first major events in New York City to be affected by the Los Angeles fires. Several other premieres in L.A. have also been called off, including those for “Unstoppable,” “Wolf Man,” and “The Last Showgirl.” Additionally, events like the AFI Awards luncheon and the BAFTA Tea Party have been postponed.
The Southern California fires have prompted changes to the Oscar nomination voting timeline. Originally set to close on January 12, voting has been extended by two days to January 14. The announcement of nominations has also been pushed back from January 17 to January 19. Conan O’Brien is set to host the Oscars ceremony on March 2.
As of now, more than 30,000 residents have been evacuated due to the wildfires, which have consumed thousands of acres and destroyed numerous structures across Los Angeles County. Fire officials are working tirelessly as they battle these dangerous blazes fueled by strong winds.
