Jesse Armstrong, the creator of Succession, is set to helm his next project: an original movie for HBO Films. The highly acclaimed writer, who earned seven Emmy Awards for his work on Succession, is partnering with the show’s executive producer Frank Rich for the new venture.
The upcoming film, still in development, will revolve around four friends who reunite during a dramatic international financial crisis, according to sources confirmed by Variety. Both Armstrong and Rich have overall deals with HBO, and Armstrong is currently in the process of writing the screenplay. Production is expected to begin later this year, with casting already underway as the studio seeks to confirm actor availability.
Armstrong’s Succession concluded its critically acclaimed four-season run in 2022. The series, centered on the fictional Roy family and their battle for control of a global media empire, became one of the most celebrated TV shows of the 21st century. It earned 19 Emmy Awards, including three for Outstanding Drama Series, and ranked No. 13 on Variety’s list of the 100 greatest TV shows of all time. The series was praised for its mix of dark humor and tragic moments, offering a unique exploration of family dynamics and corporate power.
While Armstrong is best known for his television work, he also has an impressive filmography. He co-created the beloved British sitcom Peep Show and the dramedy Fresh Meat, and has written for Veep and Black Mirror. On the film front, Armstrong was nominated for an Academy Award for co-writing the 2009 political satire In the Loop, starring Peter Capaldi and James Gandolfini. He also adapted Ruben Östlund’s Force Majeure into the 2020 comedy Downhill, starring Will Ferrell and Julia Louis-Dreyfus.
As Armstrong moves forward with this new HBO project, fans can expect another sharp and insightful look into contemporary crises, delivered with his signature storytelling style.
