Mac Miller’s long-awaited album Balloonerism is set for release on January 17. The project, a collection of 14 tracks, will be accompanied by a short film, with exclusive advance screenings scheduled for January 15 in the United States and January 16 internationally.
Tickets for the screenings, priced at $5, are now available for purchase, with all proceeds benefiting the Mac Miller Fund. The screenings will take place in major cities, including New York, Toronto, London, Paris, Melbourne, Berlin, Sydney, Dublin, and Auckland. Fans who purchase tickets will also receive limited edition Balloonerism memorabilia.
The album, created around the same time as Miller’s 2014 project Faces, was a priority for the late rapper, according to his estate. The Balloonerism film, which appears to be animated, is directed by Samuel Jerome Mason, who previously worked with Miller on his 2021 music video for “Colors and Shapes.” The film is produced by Miller’s indie label Remember Music, in collaboration with Warner Records and Hornet Studios.
Mason co-wrote the film’s story with Roland Kennedy, while animation direction is led by Stephanie Demeautis. Executive producers include Michael Feder, Greg Bedard, Hana Shimizu, and Heather Hardin.
The album features a collaboration with SZA on the track “DJ’s Chord Organ.” Miller’s estate revealed in November that Balloonerism was a project he often discussed, expressing a strong desire to release it, despite GO:OD AM and other albums taking priority at the time.
“Malcolm put a great deal of care into this project, commissioning artwork and regularly discussing its release,” the estate said in a statement. “We believe Balloonerism highlights his musical range and artistic boldness. After unofficial versions of the album circulated online for years, it felt right to officially share it with the world.”
Miller passed away in 2018 from an accidental overdose. Two years later, his estate released Circles, an album meant to complement his 2018 project Swimming.
