“Magic: The Gathering,” the popular trading card game, will be adapted into a live-action movie and TV universe. Legendary Entertainment and Hasbro Entertainment are partnering to create the universe. The first project will be a live-action movie, followed by TV series and other content.
“Magic: The Gathering” was created in 1993 and has over 50 million fans worldwide. Players act as Planeswalkers, using spells and creatures to defeat opponents. Hasbro considers it their first billion-dollar brand.
Mary Parent, Legendary’s Chairman of Worldwide Production, said they are excited to create a multimedia universe that will thrill fans and attract new ones. Zev Foreman, Hasbro Entertainment’s Head of Film, said the partnership is a perfect match because “Magic: The Gathering” has inspired decades of storytelling.
Legendary has experience with adapting franchises like “Dune” and the Monsterverse. They are also working on a “Street Fighter” adaptation and “Animal Friends”. Hasbro is developing adaptations of “Clue” and “Monopoly”. An animated “Magic: The Gathering” series is also in production at Netflix.
