Mubi, a streaming service and film distributor, has acquired the rights to the movie “Lurker” after it premiered at the Sundance Film Festival.
The deal was made for a mid-seven-figure price.
Mubi is known for distributing independent and arthouse films. The company is riding high off its five Academy Award nominations for the film “The Substance”.
“Lurker” is about a hipster who tries to become famous by exploiting a rising pop star. The movie was written and directed by Alex Russell, who previously worked on the TV show “Beef”.
The film stars Théodore Pellerin as Matty, a store clerk who befriends a singer played by Archie Madekwe. The cast also includes Havana Rose Liu, Sunny Suljic, Zack Fox, and Daniel Zolghadri.
Mubi plans to release “Lurker” in theaters. The company previously released “The Substance” and “Decision to Leave”.
WME Independent handled the sale of the film. Other films sold at Sundance include “Perfect Neighbor” and “Train Dreams” to Netflix, “Sorry, Baby” to A24, and “Together” to Neon.
