Lil Wayne has officially confirmed that his long-awaited album Tha Carter VI will be released on June 6.
The announcement came after Wayne teased the album in a Super Bowl ad for Cetaphil earlier today. While it was unclear if the ad signaled the album’s summer arrival, both Republic Records and Young Money later verified that the rapper is indeed preparing to release the next installment in his legendary Carter series this June.
Wayne’s cameo in the Super Bowl commercial hinted at his frustration with not being included in this year’s Halftime Show, which will feature Kendrick Lamar. Fans quickly took to social media to suggest that Wayne, who hails from New Orleans, should have been given the slot. The rapper humorously addressed this in the ad, which carried the tagline, “we’re all a lil sensitive.”
It has been seven years since Wayne released Tha Carter V, the fifth installment in the series that began in 2004. The album debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and included the hits “Uproar” and “Don’t Cry.” Last September, Wayne dropped Tha Fix Before Tha VI, a mixtape featuring contributions from Jon Batiste and Fousheé, hinting at the sixth album in the series.
Wayne’s most recent solo album, Funeral, was released in January 2020. In November 2023, he joined 2 Chainz for the collaborative album Welcome 2 Collegrove and has made appearances on tracks with Tyler, The Creator, Tyga, and Nicki Minaj in recent years.
