Madelyn Cline, widely recognized for her role as Sarah Cameron in Outer Banks, has been cast in Johnny Depp’s upcoming action thriller Day Drinker. Deadline first reported the news of her involvement.
Cline will join an ensemble cast that already includes Depp and Penélope Cruz. This marks the fourth collaboration between Depp and Cruz, who previously worked together on Blow, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, and Murder on the Orient Express. For Cline, however, this will be her first time working with either of the actors.
Directed by Marc Webb, Day Drinker is set to be distributed by Lionsgate. The film follows the story of a cruise ship bartender who encounters a mysterious “day drinker.” The two become entangled in a criminal underworld, their lives intertwined in unexpected ways.
The film is produced by Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee of Thunder Road, the team behind the John Wick franchise. They will be joined by Zach Dean, who wrote the original script, and Adam Kolbrenner, known for The Tomorrow War and Free Guy. Chelsea Kujawa will oversee production for Lionsgate.
Day Drinker is seen as a potential Hollywood comeback for Johnny Depp, as it marks his first major role in an American film following his highly publicized legal battle with ex-wife Amber Heard. While Depp has appeared in the French film Jeanne du Barry and directed Modi: Three Days on the Wings of Madness, Day Drinker will be his return to a high-profile Hollywood project. Depp is also the voice of Johnny Puff in the animated series Puffins and its spinoff, Johnny Puff: Secret Mission.
Madelyn Cline’s Career Highlights
Apart from Outer Banks, which is set to return for a fifth and final season in 2024, Cline gained significant recognition for her role in Glass Onion, the second film in Rian Johnson’s Knives Out series. In the movie, she portrayed Whiskey, one of the suspects in the acclaimed murder mystery film, starring Daniel Craig as detective Benoit Blanc.
Looking ahead, Cline will appear in the upcoming slasher film, an untitled sequel to I Know What You Did Last Summer. The movie also stars Sarah Pidgeon, Jonah Hauer-King, and original franchise stars Freddie Prinze Jr. and Jennifer Love Hewitt, who confirmed her return to the role of Julie James in December 2024.
Cline has also completed production on The Map That Leads To You, an Amazon MGM Studios film, alongside KJ Apa, Sofia Wylie, and Josh Lucas.
