DreamWorks Animation’s The Wild Robot took home the most awards at the 52nd annual Annie Awards on Saturday, winning a total of nine, including Best Feature. Netflix’s Arcane, an adaptation of the popular video game, led the TV/Media categories with seven wins.
However, the ceremony, held at UCLA’s Royce Hall, faced unexpected disruptions. Two fire alarms caused interruptions during the event. The first alarm sounded mid-ceremony, leading to a brief evacuation of the theater. Guests were escorted outside before being allowed back in to resume the show. A second alarm went off during the pre-show reception, keeping hundreds of attendees waiting outside for approximately 45 minutes before they could enter the venue.
Despite these interruptions, the ceremony proceeded, and ASIFA-Hollywood honored the brave efforts of Southern California’s Fire Department. The evening kicked off with a performance by the Los Angeles Firefighters Pipes and Drums, and fire department representatives presented several awards on stage.
In addition to celebrating the best in animation, the Annie Awards also launched a fundraising initiative to support members of the animation community affected by the wildfires in Southern California.
Partnering with AnimAID, a coalition of animation professionals and studios, the effort aims to raise at least $5 million through donations and an auction of animation memorabilia via Sotheby’s. During the event, more than $107,000 was raised.
