HBO has unveiled a first look at Euphoria Season 3, featuring Zendaya’s return as Rue, the series’ troubled lead.
Production on the long-awaited season recently began, nearly three years after Season 2’s debut. While most of the main cast members are returning, there are some notable absences, including Barbie Ferreira, who had previously confirmed she would not be reprising her role.
In November, HBO/Max chief Casey Bloys addressed the show’s popularity, acknowledging its star power but reassuring fans that production for the new season is moving forward as planned. “The show is getting a lot of attention now because its cast has become successful, but we’re still shooting the new season, and nothing has changed,” Bloys stated. He also confirmed that Euphoria Season 3 would consist of eight episodes.
The core cast includes Zendaya, Sydney Sweeney, Jacob Elordi, Hunter Schafer, Storm Reid, Alexa Demie, and Eric Dane. However, Angus Cloud, who portrayed Fezco, tragically passed away in July 2023 at the age of 25.
As previously reported by Variety, Euphoria creator Sam Levinson pitched new ideas for the third season in late 2023 and early 2024. His plans included a five-year time jump and potential new storylines for Rue, such as her working as a private investigator. HBO, however, chose to delay production until the show’s creative direction aligned with the tone of the previous seasons.
Beyond its impressive viewership, Euphoria has garnered significant awards recognition. The series has received 25 Emmy nominations, winning nine of them, including two for Zendaya as Best Actress in a Drama and one for Colman Domingo as Best Guest Actor. Sam Levinson also won a DGA award for the Season 2 episode “Stand Still Like the Hummingbird.”
