Gravitas Ventures has secured the U.S. and Canadian rights to the drama Grassland, executive produced by Common. The film is set to debut in April.
Directed and written by William Bermudez and Sam Friedman, Grassland tells the story of a Latina mother whose son befriends a new neighbor and his grandfather, a cop. This leads to dangerous consequences for the mother, who secretly runs a marijuana operation, and the young Black man who helps her. The film, set against the backdrop of the 2008 recession and Barack Obama’s presidential campaign, takes place in New Jersey.
“Gravitas is thrilled to release Grassland, a gripping exploration of the complexities of balancing family survival with legal and moral boundaries within the criminal justice system,” said Bill Guentzler, senior vice president of acquisitions and operations at Gravitas Ventures. “Led by an incredible cast including Mía Maestro, Quincy Isaiah, Jeff Kober, and Ravi Cabot-Conyers, the film dives into deep questions of authority, trust, family, and friendship.”
The film premiered at the Los Angeles Latino International Film Festival and had its international premiere at the Monterrey International Film Festival. It was also featured at the Pan African Film & Arts Festival.
Producers include Adam Edery and David Goldblum, with executive producers Mía Maestro, Jeff Kober, Quincy Isaiah, Paul Blavin, Amy Blavin, Marie Cisco, Mara Burros Sandler, Jeremy Paczos, and Sam Silverstein. Music for the film is composed by Zach Nicita.
Grassland has partnered with Common’s organization Free to Dream, as well as Shinola and Last Prisoner Project, for its impact campaign.
