Josh Brolin, Margaret Qualley, and Guy Pearce have been cast in Ridley Scott’s upcoming film The Dog Stars. The trio will join Jacob Elordi, who was added to the project in January after Paul Mescal departed due to scheduling conflicts.
Filming is set to begin in Italy at the end of April. The film is based on Peter Heller’s 2012 novel The Dog Stars, which was adapted for the screen by Mark L. Smith, known for his work on Twisters.
The story takes place in a post-apocalyptic world where a deadly flu virus has decimated humanity. Elordi plays Hig, a pilot who forms an unlikely friendship with a gruff gunman, portrayed by Brolin. Together, they struggle to survive against a group of scavengers. Qualley will play Cima, a young doctor and the daughter of a weary rancher, played by Pearce, whom Hig meets during his journey.
At 87, Ridley Scott continues to be a prolific filmmaker. The director, known for classics like Gladiator, Alien, Blade Runner, and Thelma & Louise, has also directed recent epics such as The Last Duel, House of Gucci, Napoleon, and the upcoming Gladiator II.
The Dog Stars marks another reunion for Scott with his previous collaborators. Brolin starred in American Gangster and Pearce appeared in Prometheus and Alien: Covenant.
Brolin’s recent work includes Dune: Part Two, with upcoming roles in Knives Out 3, Wake Up Dead Man, and Edgar Wright’s The Running Man remake. Qualley, who gained recognition in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, recently starred in the Oscar-nominated body-horror film The Substance. Pearce is currently nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in The Brutalist.
