Ethan Hunt may soon make his way to Cannes.
While no official decision has been made, Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning is reportedly considering a debut at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival, which would bring Tom Cruise’s star power to the event. Paramount, which is releasing the movie in theaters on May 21, has declined to comment on the potential Cannes premiere. The film is set to be Cruise’s final appearance as the IMF agent.
Paramount has a long-standing relationship with the festival, as does Cruise, who last attended in 2022 for Top Gun: Maverick. The film was a global success, grossing $1.45 billion at the box office and receiving six Oscar nominations, including a win for Best Sound.
Other American filmmakers are also eyeing Cannes for their latest films. Spike Lee’s Highest 2 Lowest, starring Denzel Washington, is one of the most anticipated, with A24 and AppleTV+ behind the project.
Wes Anderson’s The Phoenician Scheme, featuring a star-studded cast including Tom Hanks, Bryan Cranston, and Scarlett Johansson, is also tipped for the festival. Richard Linklater’s Nouvelle Vague, about the making of Jean-Luc Godard’s Breathless, and Jim Jarmusch’s Father Mother Sister Brother, starring Adam Driver and Cate Blanchett, are other films expected to make waves at Cannes.
However, it’s unlikely that Brad Pitt’s F1 movie will premiere at the festival, according to sources.
The Cannes Film Festival continues to thrive under the leadership of Thierry Fremaux, who has curated several landmark editions. Last year’s festival premiered three of the year’s most talked-about films, including potential Best Picture contenders such as Sean Baker’s Anora, Jacques Audiard’s Emilia Perez, and Coralie Fargeat’s The Substance. However, not all big-budget films have found success at the festival; while Top Gun: Maverick benefited from its Cannes debut, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny struggled with a lukewarm reception ahead of its 2023 premiere.
