Matt Damon has been confirmed to portray Odysseus in Christopher Nolan’s highly anticipated film “The Odyssey.” The announcement was made on Monday via the film’s official social media account, which shared a striking image of Damon in character. The post stated, “Matt Damon is Odysseus. A film by Christopher Nolan, #TheOdysseyMovie is in theaters July 17, 2026.”
Damon will star alongside a remarkable cast that includes Tom Holland, Mia Goth, Zendaya, Anne Hathaway, Lupita Nyong’o, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, and many others. While Damon’s role has been officially revealed, speculation continues regarding the characters played by the rest of the ensemble. Reports suggest that Holland may take on the role of Telemachus, but this has yet to be confirmed.
Based on Homer’s ancient epic, “The Odyssey” tells the story of Odysseus as he navigates a perilous journey home after the Trojan War. This classic tale has captivated readers for over two millennia and remains one of the most significant works in Western literature. Universal Pictures, which has collaborated with Nolan in the past, described the film as a “mythic action epic” that will utilize cutting-edge IMAX technology for its cinematography.
Nolan not only directs but also wrote the screenplay and serves as a producer alongside his wife, Emma Thomas. The film is set to begin production in Sicily this spring, specifically on the Island of Favignana, which is believed to be where Homer envisioned Odysseus landing with his crew.
“The Odyssey” marks the third collaboration between Nolan and Damon. Previously, Damon appeared in supporting roles in both “Interstellar” and “Oppenheimer,” the latter of which won multiple Academy Awards including Best Picture.
With filming underway and a release date set for July 17, 2026, excitement continues to build for this epic adaptation of a timeless story.
