AMC has confirmed that Dark Winds will return for a fourth season, set to premiere in 2026. This announcement comes just days before the much-anticipated debut of Season 3 on March 9.
The crime drama, set in the 1970s, follows Joe Leaphorn, a Navajo Tribal Police lieutenant, played by Zahn McClarnon. Leaphorn works alongside officers Jim Chee (Kiowa Gordon) and Bernadette Manuelito (Jessica Matten) to uncover the truth behind violent crimes on their reservation. Season 3 will continue six months after the events of Season 2, with Leaphorn and Chee investigating the disappearance of two boys, armed with little more than an abandoned bicycle and a blood-stained patch of ground. Meanwhile, Manuelito, now part of the Border Patrol, discovers a human and drug smuggling ring as she adjusts to her new life, 500 miles away from home.
Season 4 will mark McClarnon’s directorial debut.
Dark Winds, created by Graham Roland and based on Tony Hillerman’s Leaphorn & Chee books, has garnered praise for its authentic storytelling. John Wirth serves as showrunner, with a team of executive producers that includes Roland, Wirth, McClarnon, Robert Redford, George R.R. Martin, Chris Eyre, Tina Elmo, Jim Chory, Vince Gerardis, and Anne Hillerman.
AMC Networks President Dan McDermott shared his enthusiasm about the show’s success, stating, “From the moment we greenlit the first season, we saw the potential for Dark Winds to become an authentic, long-running franchise. What this cast and creative team have delivered has exceeded our expectations, and fans have embraced it. With unforgettable novels at its foundation and an extraordinary team behind it, including Robert Redford and George R.R. Martin, Dark Winds has become a standout show. We can’t wait for the exciting stories to unfold in Seasons 3 and 4.”

I’m grateful for the support of AMC Networks and thrilled to continue working with this talented cast and crew.”
Showrunner John Wirth also shared his gratitude, commenting, “The support from AMC has been incredible, and we’re all excited to continue exploring the world of Dark Winds in Season 4. Our writers, cast, and crew are energized by the opportunity to keep building on this amazing story.”
