The latest short film from the U.K.’s National Film & Television School, “Do Mosquitos Bite in Winter?,” has announced its lead cast, featuring Honor Swinton Byrne (“The Souvenir,” “A Very Royal Scandal”) and Rory Fleck-Byrne (“In Camera,” “This is Going to Hurt”). Joining them is rising star Lily-Beau Leach, known for her impressive performance in “Hoard.”
Directed by Anne-Sofie Lindgaard, the family drama explores themes of separation through the perspective of a nine-year-old protagonist named Ruby. The story delves into “the fragility of a family through a child’s imagination and sense of the world.”
Lindgaard expressed her excitement about the cast, stating, “Casting with Simon Higgins was crucial to the film; our collaboration was key in establishing the right dynamic of the small family at the heart of the story.” She praised Lily-Beau Leach’s talent and felt fortunate to have Honor and Rory on board, noting their nuanced approach to the script.
The project, produced by Mauro Mate and Shreya Desai, is currently in post-production. This marks Lindgaard’s third short film while studying at NFTS, following previous works like “Icelandic Poppies,” which was shortlisted for the Robert Award and won several international festival awards.
