During the monologue, O’Brien humorously questioned Sandler’s attire, asking, “Adam, what are you wearing?” He added, “You look like someone playing video poker at 2 a.m.” Sandler responded with a smile, saying, “Nobody even thought about what I was wearing until you brought it up. I like how I look because I’m a good person. I don’t care about what I wear or don’t wear.”
Despite O’Brien’s apology for the jest, Sandler decided to leave the ceremony, inviting the audience to join him for a game of five-on-five basketball at Veteran Park later that night.
