Greenwich Entertainment has secured the North American distribution rights to Marcella, a documentary focusing on the iconic Italian chef and cookbook author Marcella Hazan. Directed by Emmy and Peabody Award winner Peter Miller, the film premiered at the Coronado Island Film Festival, where it won the Audience Award. It later took home the Best Film award at the 2025 Taste Awards.
The documentary will be released in theaters on May 9, ahead of its national broadcast and streaming debut on PBS’ American Masters. The exact airing date will be revealed at a later time.
Marcella Hazan, often described by Julia Child as “my mentor in all things Italian,” fundamentally changed the way Americans cook and understand Italian cuisine. Her best-selling cookbooks brought authentic Italian cooking to homes across the U.S. The New York Times praised Hazan, saying, “What Alice Waters did for restaurants, Hazan did for home cooks.” Marcella provides an intimate look at her life, legacy, and culinary philosophy, featuring commentary from renowned figures in the food world, including Jacques Pépin, Lidia Bastianich, Shola Olunloyo, Danny Meyer, April Bloomfield, and her son, Giuliano Hazan.
The film is produced by Renée Frigo, p.g.a. (Love, Charlie), Peter Miller, and editor Amy Linton. It is executive produced by Margie Geddes, Michael Kantor of American Masters, and celebrity chef Art Smith. The deal was negotiated by Greenwich’s Andy Bohn and Renée Frigo on behalf of the filmmakers.
Renée Frigo expressed, “Marcella was a force of nature who reshaped how we experience Italian cooking at home. Her legacy lives on in every simple, beautifully prepared dish made with love.” Peter Miller added, “Marcella’s life was eventful, inspiring, and cinematic. It’s an honor to bring her powerful story to the screen.”
