Film Movement has secured the U.S. distribution rights for Pedro Martín-Calero’s debut horror film, “The Wailing” (“El llanto”), following its successful world premiere at the San Sebastian Film Festival. The announcement was made by Film Movement’s president, Michael Rosenberg, and Vicente Canales, managing director of Film Factory Entertainment, the film’s sales agent.
“The Wailing” is a Spanish-Argentine co-production that earned Martín-Calero the Silver Shell for Best Director at San Sebastian and a nomination for the Spanish Academy Goya Award for Best New Director.
The film is set for a theatrical release in the U.S. in 2025, with subsequent digital and home entertainment releases to follow.
Plot And Production
The film tells the story of three young women, separated by decades and vast distances, who are haunted by an invisible threat. Each time they confront this presence, they are met with a chilling wailing sound.
Martín-Calero co-wrote the screenplay with Isabel Peña, known for her work on “The Beasts” and “The Candidate.” The film was produced by Madrid-based Caballo Films, which has supported projects by Rodrigo Sorogoyen, including the award-winning “The Beasts.”
