Michael Hirst, the creator of Vikings, is returning to the world of Norse history with a new project. Along with his son Horatio Hirst, Michael has partnered with Amazon Prime Video for a historical drama titled Bloodaxe.
The series will explore the true story of Erik Bloodaxe, a renowned Viking warrior, and his wife Gunnhild, Mother of Kings. This project marks the Hirsts’ latest venture into Viking-themed drama. Michael Hirst previously created the popular Vikings series on History Channel and served as an executive producer for Netflix’s Vikings: Valhalla. Horatio Hirst, who appeared in multiple episodes of Valhalla, will make his writing debut with Bloodaxe.
Michael expressed excitement about returning to the Viking world: “I feel blessed and deeply excited that Amazon has given me the opportunity to return to the fantastic world of the Norse Sagas,” he said.
“Horatio and I intend to open your eyes to incredible new characters and unbelievable stories, all of which happen to be true and many of which changed the course of history.”
According to the official description, Bloodaxe follows Erik Bloodaxe and Gunnhild as they battle for the throne of Norway. The kingdom is torn by fierce rivals, shifting loyalties, and bloody betrayals. As war approaches and chaos spreads, the couple faces challenges not only from the ruthless kings of neighboring Scandinavian lands but also from a powerful English ruler.
Vernon Sanders, head of television at Amazon MGM Studios, praised the Hirsts’ talent: “We are thrilled to partner with Michael and Horatio Hirst, who have an impressive track record bringing historical dramas to life with stunning authenticity and gripping storytelling,” Sanders said. “This story is a fascinating tale of Erik Bloodaxe, and we can’t wait to unveil this new chapter to transport our global customers back to a fascinating era of history.”
The Hirsts will serve as creators, writers, and executive producers for Bloodaxe. Steve Stark will also executive produce through his Toluca Pictures label, with Arturo Interian, Morgan O’Sullivan, John Weber, and Sheila Hockin joining as executive producers. The series will be produced by MGM Television, which also produced Vikings and Vikings: Valhalla.
