The popular series “Warrior Nun” is set to make a comeback in the form of a trilogy of movies, as confirmed by the website WarriorNunSaved.com and the show’s executive producer Dean English. This news comes after a period of anticipation fueled by hints from the show’s creative team following its cancellation on Netflix.
A brief overview: “Warrior Nun” is a young adult fantasy series that ran for two seasons on Netflix before being abruptly canceled in December 2022, shortly after the release of its second season in November. The cancellation was attributed to low viewership.
Throughout Christmas and the entirety of 2023, a fervent fan campaign spread across the internet, urging for a revival or a third season, targeting Netflix and other streaming platforms.
In late June 2023, a new website emerged, with the show’s creator, Simon Barry, teasing that the show had been saved and that details would be revealed on August 15th (August 16th for those in Europe and further east). At that time, the nature of the revival was still unknown.
On the day of the revival announcement, sources confirmed that the revival would not be happening on Netflix.
It has now been officially disclosed that “Warrior Nun” will make its return through a trilogy of movies, marking it as one of the rare canceled Netflix Originals to be given a new life outside the Netflix platform.
The statement on the website reads as follows:
“Hello, I’m Dean English, the executive producer of Warrior Nun. I’m the individual who discovered the graphic novel and dared to ask, ‘What if?’ First and foremost, I’d like to express my gratitude to all of you devoted fans. It’s your incredible energy that propels us to keep moving forward and crafting these narratives. You truly make it all worthwhile. So thank you immensely for your unwavering support.
I am thrilled to announce the return of Warrior Nun as a trilogy of motion pictures. Once again, a trilogy of feature films. Three.
Now, we need to address the ongoing strike in Hollywood involving actors and writers. This has prevented us from making any announcements on that front today. Some may wonder, ‘Could this possibly indicate the launch of a Warrior Nun universe, expanding into films and TV series centered around familiar characters?’ The answer to that question is a resounding yes. Further details will be revealed in due course.
A Halo Bearer email hotline has been established for you to subscribe to. From there, you will receive updates on all significant developments as we move forward. And there will be plenty. I’m aware that many of you have questions. These answers will be provided through that channel.
In closing, I want to convey that your collective hard work has made me incredibly proud and consistently fuels my determination to press on. So, in this life or the next.”
Showrunner Amy Berg took to Twitter to state that she is currently not involved in the movie projects, saying:
“I have not been approached about participating in the movies or any #WarriorNun universe project, and as far as I’m aware, there are currently no deals in place with anyone who was involved in making the show. If that changes, I’m sure you’ll hear about it.”
According to The Wrap, Simon Barry is also not presently involved in the project.
Dean English’s production company, Perfectly Productive Media, based in Vancouver, Canada, is attached to produce the trilogy of movies.
Fan response to the news of the movie trilogy has been overwhelmingly positive, and several cast members have also expressed their excitement about the return.
However, several questions remain unanswered, much like a few weeks ago. Notably absent from the announcement are details regarding the distribution of the movies and the source of funding. Additionally, uncertainties surrounding those involved persist due to ongoing strikes. As of now, no streaming service or distributor is connected to the movies, eliminating Netflix as a possibility.
