Steven Knight, the creator and writer of Peaky Blinders, has expressed his desire for the upcoming Peaky Blinders film to be shown in movie theaters. Knight shared that he wants fans of the show, who have supported it throughout the years, to experience the movie together in a cinema setting.
“I really want the ‘Peaky’ fans, who have been a big part of this, to be watching it all together in one building,” Knight told The Playlist. He explained that while fans have communicated online, he hopes the movie’s release will allow them to share the experience in person.
The Peaky Blinders series, which ran on Netflix for six seasons from 2013 to 2022, has become a cultural phenomenon. In June 2024, it was officially announced that a film adaptation of the show was in the works. Cillian Murphy, who played Tommy Shelby, will return as both star and producer, with Tom Harper set to direct.
Knight shared his excitement about the film’s impressive cast and production. “We wrapped on December 13th,” Knight said, mentioning a stellar lineup of actors, including Barry Keoghan, Tim Roth, Rebecca Ferguson, Cillian Murphy, and Stephen Graham. He added that the film is “mind-blowingly good.”
Murphy, reflecting on his time as Tommy Shelby, said his character’s story “wasn’t finished with me.” He also expressed his excitement about working with Knight and Harper once again, calling the film “one for the fans.”
While plot details for the movie remain secret, the original series was set in early 20th-century England, following a group of gangsters involved in organized crime in Birmingham.
Tom Harper, who directed the series’ early episodes, spoke about the movie’s significance. “When I first directed Peaky Blinders over 10 years ago, we didn’t know what the series would become, but there was something in the chemistry of the cast and writing that felt explosive,” he said. He went on to say that Peaky Blinders has always been a story about family, and he is thrilled to reunite with Knight and Murphy to bring the movie to audiences worldwide on Netflix.
