Director Yeon Sang-Ho, known for his hit zombie films Train to Busan and its sequel Peninsula, is set to return to the undead genre with his new project Gunche. The movie is expected to release in 2026.
Gunche is currently in production and will star several well-known actors, including Ji Chang-wook, Go Soo, Koo Kyo-hwan, and Jun Ji-hyun. The title “Gunche” means “colony” in a biological context. According to distributor Showbox, the film will be a continuation of Yeon’s cinematic universe, which began with Train to Busan and expanded with Peninsula. Yeon had previously expressed interest in creating a third film in the Train to Busan series, and Gunche could be that long-awaited project.
Before working on Gunche, Yeon Sang-Ho directed the films Jung_E and Revelations and worked on the TV shows Hellbound and Parasyte: The Grey. While it’s unclear whether Gunche is officially Train to Busan 3, the Train to Busan franchise may still have more to offer.
In addition to Gunche, an English-language remake of Train to Busan, titled The Last Train to New York, was announced in 2021. Directed by Timo Tjahjanto, the remake was described as a reimagining rather than a direct remake. It was initially expected to release in 2023, but there are still uncertainties about its production. Tjahjanto has been busy with other projects, including The Beekeeper 2 and Nobody 2, which may delay the release of The Last Train to New York. Fans may have to wait a bit longer before seeing the new version of the beloved zombie film.
