Fans of Margot Robbie and Colin Farrell will have to wait longer to see their romantic fantasy film A Big Bold Beautiful Journey. Sony has announced that the film’s domestic theatrical release has been moved from May 9 to September 19.
Sources close to the production tell Variety that the studio believes a September release is more strategic. The fall season typically features more horror and male-centered films, which makes the female-led film stand out more in that time frame.
A Big Bold Beautiful Journey is described as “an imaginative tale of two strangers and the extraordinary emotional journey that connects them.” The film also stars Lily Rabe, Jodie Turner-Smith, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, and Hamish Linklater. It is directed by Kogonada, known for the TV series Pachinko and the sci-fi drama After Yang. The script is written by Seth Reiss, the writer behind The Menu.
30West is financing the film, while Sony Pictures will handle its global release. The film is produced by Bradley Thomas and Ryan Friedkin of Imperative Entertainment, along with Seth Reiss and Youree Henley.
Kogonada, Ilene Feldman, and Ori Eisen serve as executive producers.
Sony Pictures acquired the film in a competitive bidding war at the European Film Market in Berlin in February 2024. The studio’s chairman, Tom Rothman, called it “a project from heaven.”
Robbie is represented by CAA, Entertainment 360, attorney Jeff Bernstein, Aran Michael Management, and Narrative. Farrell is represented by CAA, managers Ilene Feldman and Claudine Farrell, attorney Steve Warren, and Kovert Creative. Kogonada is represented by WME, Ilene Feldman Management, and attorneys Daniel Passman and Tara Kole.
