In a recent interview with Decider, actor Michael Cera, recognized for his roles in notable films like Superbad, Juno, and Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist, unveiled his aspirations to venture into the directorial realm with his debut feature-length project. During the discussion, which took place prior to the SAG-AFTRA strike, the star expressed his interest in returning to the director’s chair.
Cera’s previous directorial experience includes three shorts in 2013: B****, Failure, and Brazzaville Teen-Ager. He also took the helm of the 2007 CBS mockumentary Clark and Michael, showcasing his engagement with various facets of the entertainment industry early in his career.
The Youth in Revolt actor first spoke about his intention to re-engage with independent comedy, marking his starting point with the forthcoming comedy-drama The Adults, directed by Dustin Guy Defa. Additionally, Cera is set to appear in Dream Scenario, a horror comedy led by Nicolas Cage and directed by Kristoffer Borgli, scheduled for release by A24. He will also make a return to the Scott Pilgrim universe through the animated series Scott Pilgrim The Anime.
In discussing the series, Cera remarked on its unique energy, stating, “Scott Pilgrim has such a specific energy. The whole project, the world of Scott Pilgrim, is very energetic and really funny.” He praised Bryan Lee O’Malley’s script for the series, expressing excitement about its development.
Despite his recent engagements, Cera conveyed a sense of balance, explaining that he doesn’t feel overwhelmed by his projects, thanks in part to his involvement in The Adults in 2021. He emphasized the importance of focusing on one’s own work while navigating collaborative endeavors.
Cera disclosed his ongoing desire to return to the director’s chair for a feature-length film. He shared, “I have ambitions to direct. You have to forfeit a lot of control as an actor, whatever it is, a play or a movie. You’re not really in control broadly of how the whole thing is coming across, so you have to not worry about that and just focus on what you’re doing. Focus on your own work and just stay in your lane.”
The actor revealed that he is currently working on a new project that he plans to direct. Although he provided few details, he described it as a “family story” with a mysterious quality. As he continues to explore his multifaceted creative endeavors, Cera’s transition to the directorial realm adds a new dimension to his already diverse career.
The Adults is set to debut in select US theaters on August 18th, while Dream Scenario is scheduled for release on November 10th following its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival as the opening film.
