Lady Gaga’s latest album, Mayhem, has quickly climbed to the top of the charts, debuting at No. 1 in the United States this week. The album marks a major achievement in Gaga’s career, earning 219,000 units in its opening week, according to Luminate. This impressive debut gives Mayhem the distinction of having the biggest opening week for an album by a woman in 2023. It also delivered Gaga’s best streaming debut to date, reaching 108 million streams.
This is not the first time Gaga has topped the charts. She has previously had five solo studio albums debut at No. 1, including Born This Way, Artpop, Joanne, and Chromatica, as well as the A Star Is Born soundtrack and her collaborative album with Tony Bennett, Cheek to Cheek.
Ahead of Mayhem’s release, Gaga made a strategic move by selling 14 different physical versions of the album. These included limited-edition vinyl, CDs, and cassettes, each featuring the original cover art. Of the 219,000 units sold in the first week, 136,000 were album sales, making it the top-selling album of the week. Notably, vinyl sales accounted for 74,000 of that total, setting a new career-best for Gaga in vinyl sales.
The highest-charting single from Mayhem so far is “Abracadabra,” which Gaga debuted during a commercial break at the Grammy Awards in February. The album also includes previously released singles such as “Disease,” “Abracadabra,” and “Die With a Smile,” featuring Bruno Mars.
In other chart news, Blackpink’s Jennie debuts as a solo artist at No. 7 with her debut LP, Ruby, earning 56,000 units in its first week. The album, which blends pop and R&B, features collaborations with artists like Childish Gambino, Doechii, Dominic Fike, FKJ, Dua Lipa, and Kali Uchis. Ruby marks the third solo album by a Blackpink member to land in the top 10, following Rosé’s Rosie (No. 3) and Lisa’s Alter Ego (No. 7).
The rest of the top 10 albums this week include Kendrick Lamar’s GNX at No. 2 with 81,000 units sold, PartyNextDoor and Drake’s $ome $exy $ongs 4 U at No. 3, SZA’s SOS at No. 4, Tate McRae’s So Close To What at No. 5, Sabrina Carpenter’s Short n’ Sweet at No. 6, Bad Bunny’s Debí Tirar Más Fotos at No. 8, Morgan Wallen’s One Thing at a Time at No. 9, and Chappell Roan’s The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess at No. 10.
