Madlib has teamed up with Your Old Droog for a new project under the name Droogie Otis, marking his first major work since losing his home and studio in the Altadena fires in January 2025.
Droog’s new single, “Everything Designer,” featuring Boldy James, is the first track from their upcoming album. Despite the challenges, Droog says the fire motivated both artists to continue working. “When things like that happen, it pushes you to be greater and try to keep going,” Droog told Variety.
The track highlights Droog’s sharp lyrics, reflecting his personal experiences and influences. He explains that his long-time goal was to collaborate with Madlib, and after years of releasing music, he was finally contacted by Madlib in 2021.
Though they’ve released several tracks together, Droog says the full album came together naturally. “The bar is always ‘Madvillain,’” he says, referencing Madlib’s iconic album with MF Doom. Their upcoming project, due this summer, emphasizes their shared love for the craft without a rigid marketing plan.
Droog continues to work on other projects with Edan and Count Bass D while also helping Madlib rebuild his studio and record collection.
“Everything Designer” will be available on streaming services starting March 21, 2025.
