Disney’s live-action Snow White has had a disappointing start at the international box office, earning $44.3 million from 51 markets. The film, starring Rachel Zegler and Gal Gadot, performed best in the U.K. ($5.1 million), Mexico ($4.1 million), and France ($3 million), but struggled in China, grossing only $900,000.
With a $250 million production budget, Snow White grossed $87.3 million globally, including $43 million from domestic markets. Expectations were for the film to debut at $100 million worldwide. Whether it becomes a success depends on its performance in the coming weeks, as Disney hopes it will eventually match the success of Mufasa: The Lion King ($716 million), rather than the underwhelming returns of Dumbo (2019, $353 million).
In another disappointing release, Robert De Niro’s mob drama The Alto Knights bombed internationally, grossing just $1.8 million from eight markets, including the U.K., Italy, France, and Spain. The film earned only $3.2 million domestically, failing to connect with critics or audiences. The film’s $45 million budget makes its poor performance especially concerning.
The Alto Knights is Warner Bros.’ second consecutive flop after Mickey 17, which is expected to lose $75-80 million. Despite crossing the $100 million global mark, Mickey 17 still needs to gross at least $275 million to break even.
Hollywood has faced a rough 2025 at the box office, with disappointing releases such as Captain America: Brave New World. However, there is optimism for upcoming films like A Minecraft Movie and Thunderbolts, which are expected to boost ticket sales in the summer.
“‘Minecraft’ and upcoming May releases are set to bring a positive shift to the box office,” says Paul Dergarabedian, senior analyst at Comscore.
