Streaming giant Netflix is bolstering its lineup of Australian originals with the announcement of four new productions, signaling its commitment to creating diverse and engaging content for its viewers. Among the upcoming releases is the movie “Love Is In The Air,” featuring Delta Goodrem in the lead role as a seaplane pilot who finds unexpected romance amidst challenges.
Set against the stunning backdrop of Queensland’s Whitsundays islands and captured with the advanced 8K Vista Vision technology, the film is helmed by director Adrian Powers and co-produced alongside Jaggi Entertainment. The movie boasts an ensemble cast including Joshua Sasse, Steph Tisdell, and Roy Billing. “Love Is In The Air” is scheduled to make its debut on Netflix on September 28.
The burgeoning Australian slate also includes two new series. The first is tentatively titled “Desert King,” a captivating ‘Outback Western,’ which is a collaborative effort between Netflix, Easy Tiger, and Ronde. Created by Tim Lee and Ben Davies, the series presents an intricate saga revolving around billionaire miners, traditional landowners, cowboys, and desert gangsters vying for control over an expansive cattle station that spans an area comparable to Wales. The series is directed by Greg McLean, with production spearheaded by Paul Ranford, and executive producers Ben Davies, Ian Collie, and Rob Gibson.
Another exciting addition to the lineup is the crime mystery series “The Survivors,” adapted from Australian author Jane Harper’s novel of the same name. Set in a Tasmanian seaside town grappling with the lingering aftermath of a tragic storm that claimed the lives of three young individuals, the series delves into unresolved guilt and grief. “The Survivors” is co-produced in partnership with Tony Ayres Productions, a division of Universal International Studios.
Venturing into the realm of documentary, Netflix is set to unveil “Onefour: Against All Odds,” a film that explores the controversies surrounding Australian drill rap group Onefour. Comprising a collective of Sydney-based, Pacific Islanders, the group’s sold-out national tour was curtailed by a police task force due to concerns about the potential incitement of violence through their music. Directed by Gabriel Gasparinatos, the documentary is produced by Entropico and Stranger Than Fiction.
These four compelling additions join an already vibrant lineup of Australian content, including the previously announced series “Boy Swallows Universe,” an adaptation of the Trent Dalton novel starring Travis Fimmel, Simon Baker, and Phoebe Tonkin. Additionally, animated kids series “Eddie’s Lil Homies” and the second seasons of “Heartbreak High” and “Surviving Summer” contribute to Netflix’s robust commitment to showcasing captivating Australian stories.
Que Minh Luu, Content Director for Netflix Australia and New Zealand, expressed their dedication to fostering Australian narratives: “We hope to continue to create space for Australian stories to be told and succeed, following the success of films like ‘Run Rabbit Run,’ ‘True Spirit,’ ‘The Stranger,’ and series like ‘Wellmania,’ ‘Heartbreak High,’ and ‘Surviving Summer,’ which have garnered millions of view hours and solidified their positions on our Top 10 lists both locally and globally.”
As Netflix continues to expand its content portfolio, these diverse Australian productions promise to captivate audiences with their unique storytelling and cinematic prowess.
