The award-winning documentary Holding Liat, produced by Darren Aronofsky, has been acquired by MetFilm Sales for worldwide distribution. The film recently won the Best Documentary Feature award at the Berlin International Film Festival, qualifying it for consideration at the 2026 Oscars.
Directed by Brendan Kramer, Holding Liat chronicles the real-time story of an Israeli-American family fighting to free their loved ones from captivity in Gaza following the October 7 attacks. The documentary explores the complex dynamics of family identity and relationships in the face of violence and loss.
The Berlinale jury praised the film for addressing the complexities of violence, justice, and history without hesitation, highlighting its emotional depth. Zak Brilliant, head of sales and distribution at MetFilm, expressed excitement about working with the filmmaking team. “We are honored to present this extraordinary film to global buyers. Holding Liat is a powerful and vital account of a deeply tragic situation, showcasing the strength of holding space for peace in the midst of violence,” Brilliant said.
Produced by Protozoa and Meridian Hill Pictures, Holding Liat was directed by Kramer and produced by Lance Kramer, Aronofsky, Ari Handel, Yoni Brook, and Justin A. Gonçalves.
Kramer shared his experience working on the project, noting, “We had a unique opportunity to document this historical moment through the lens of one family. The journey the story took us on was profound, and we are excited to partner with MetFilm to share it with audiences worldwide.”
