Pakistani cinema is ready to embrace the horror genre once again with Deemak (meaning “Termite”), a psychological supernatural thriller. Directed by Rafay Rashdi and written by Ayesha Muzaffar, the film aims to raise the bar for local cinema with high production values and engaging storytelling.
The film centers around the strained relationship between a mother-in-law and daughter-in-law, set against the backdrop of disturbing paranormal events in their family home. As supernatural activity intensifies, a psychological battle emerges between the two women, with the son caught in the middle.
Starring Faysal Quraishi, Sonya Hussyn, Samina Peerzada, Javed Sheikh, and Bushra Ansari, Deemak blends elements of cultural folklore surrounding Jinns with psychological horror. Executive producer Syed Murad Ali brings his lifelong passion for horror to the project, hoping to support Pakistan’s untapped talent with quality storytelling.
Director Rafay Rashdi describes the film as the realization of a long-held ambition. Initially conceived as a project titled Yaqeen (“Belief”), the concept evolved through Rashdi’s collaboration with Muzaffar, adding emotional depth to the supernatural story.
Pakistan’s horror genre, though niche, has seen significant moments over the years, from the cult classic Zinda Laash (1967) to more recent films like In Flames (2023). Deemak marks another step in the genre’s growth, combining supernatural themes with emotional drama.
The film will be released nationwide on Eid ul Adha (June 6).
