Hiccup and Toothless are making a comeback on the big screen in 2027. Universal Pictures announced on Wednesday that a live-action adaptation of How to Train Your Dragon 2 is in the works. The film will be released on June 11, 2027, as part of Universal’s slate of upcoming summer blockbusters.
This new film will arrive a week after Sony’s animated Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse. The announcement comes two months before the live-action remake of How to Train Your Dragon, set to hit theaters on June 13, 2025. Universal gave audiences a sneak peek of the upcoming remake at CinemaCon, receiving positive feedback from viewers.
Director Dean DeBlois, who has been with the franchise from the beginning, expressed his excitement during the presentation. “We are so excited to bring a big summer title to your theaters in two years,” DeBlois said at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. He was joined by actor Gerard Butler, who plays Stoick the Vast, and Nico Parker, who portrays a new character—an interest of Hiccup’s.
How to Train Your Dragon tells the story of Hiccup, a young Viking misfit who befriends a dragon named Toothless. Their friendship challenges the long-standing feud between Vikings and dragons. The sequel, How to Train Your Dragon 2, picks up five years later, following a 20-year-old Hiccup and his friends as they confront a villain who plans to use dragons to take over the world.
DeBlois is returning as the director and writer for the live-action remake. He previously directed the How to Train Your Dragon trilogy, which includes the 2010 original, the 2014 sequel, and 2019’s How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World. The trilogy earned over $1.6 billion globally and received four Academy Award nominations.
