A Minecraft Movie has exploded at the global box office, earning $301 million in its opening weekend and becoming the second-highest grossing film of 2025. The PG-rated action comedy from Warner Bros. and Legendary now trails only Marvel’s Captain America: Brave New World, which has made $410 million after eight weeks.
The film, based on the popular video game, earned $157 million domestically and $144 million from 68 international markets. Analysts had predicted a much smaller debut of $135–145 million globally, making the $150 million production’s success a surprise win for Hollywood.
Directed by Jared Hess and starring Jack Black and Jason Momoa, the story follows four misfits who are pulled into a blocky digital world. Since its 2011 release, Minecraft has become a global gaming phenomenon, helping fuel the film’s strong ticket sales through family appeal and social media buzz.
International highlights include $19.9 million in the UK, $14.5 million in China, $11.2 million in Mexico, and $10.6 million in Germany. In China, Minecraft is already the biggest non-local film of the year and the most successful video game adaptation in five years.
The film’s performance is seen as a boost to a slow 2025 box office, following underwhelming showings from titles like Snow White and Mickey 17. Upcoming releases such as Thunderbolts, Superman, and Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning are now expected to build on this momentum.
“This has been a pivotal weekend,” said Comscore analyst Paul Dergarabedian. “Minecraft delivered some of the year’s best numbers and signals a strong comeback for theaters.”
