Jumbo, an Indonesian animated feature, has made history by becoming the highest-grossing animated film in the country, surpassing 1 million admissions within just seven days of its release. The film, produced by Visinema Studios, premiered on March 31 and broke the record previously held by Si Juki The Movie: Panitia Hari Akhir (2017), which garnered 642,312 admissions.
The story follows Don, a young boy who, often overlooked by his peers, attempts to perform in a talent show with a play based on a fairytale book left by his late parents. His plans are thrown into chaos when a bully steals the book, leading Don to meet a mysterious child who seeks his help to reunite with her parents.
“These numbers represent more than ticket sales. They show love, hope, and trust in our local stories,” said Anggia Kharisma, producer of Jumbo. “The heartfelt response from Indonesian audiences makes the challenges of the past five years worthwhile.”
The film’s success is remarkable in a market dominated by horror films, which make up more than 50% of domestic theatrical releases. Jumbo stands out with its family-friendly narrative focused on themes of warmth, hope, and connection.
On social media, Jumbo has also gained significant attention, with fan groups like “Jumbo’s Free Buzzers” creating viral memes and posts that kept the film trending on platforms like X and TikTok.
After its domestic success, Jumbo will expand internationally, starting in June with releases in Malaysia, Singapore, and Brunei Darussalam. It will also be screened in parts of Asia and Europe, including Russia, Ukraine, the Baltic states, and several Central Asian countries.
The film’s success marks a milestone for Indonesia’s animation industry, having been created through a five-year collaborative effort involving over 420 Indonesian animators and creators.
Visinema Group, founded in 2008 by filmmaker Angga Dwimas Sasongko, continues to build a portfolio of successful projects, including Nussa, Mencuri Raden Saleh, and Keluarga Cemara.
