The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will introduce a new Oscar category for stunt design, starting with the 100th Academy Awards in 2028, for films released in 2027.
The initiative, led by director David Leitch, a former stunt performer, aims to honor the work of stunt professionals. Leitch, along with stunt coordinator Chris O’Hara and others, pushed for the new category, which was approved by the Academy’s Board of Governors.
Academy CEO Bill Kramer and President Janet Yang praised the move, recognizing stunt design as an integral part of filmmaking. Leitch expressed gratitude for the recognition, noting stunts’ historical importance in cinema.
Chad Stahelski, director of John Wick, emphasized the collaborative nature of stunt work, calling the new category a well-deserved acknowledgment for the entire department.
Specific rules for eligibility and voting will be announced in 2027. This follows the addition of the casting achievement award in 2024.
Jeff Wolfe, president of the Stuntmen’s Association, called the new Oscar a “historic moment” for the stunt community, validating their work and creativity.
The stunt community has gained recognition in recent years, with SAG introducing an Outstanding Stunt Ensemble category in 2007, and the Directors Guild adding a “stunt designer” credit in 2024.
