The music video crafted by Kazakh director Aisultan Seitov, corresponding to the track “A Lot” by 21 Savage featuring J. Cole in 2019, has secured the 82nd position within Rolling Stone magazine’s curated selection of the 150 greatest hip-hop videos. This recognition was unveiled by the New York-based magazine on August 10.
Rolling Stone, a prominent American monthly publication renowned for its coverage of music, politics, and prevailing cultural trends, has unveiled a meticulously curated compilation of the 150 most exceptional hip-hop videos, as assembled by the magazine’s editorial team alongside a consortium of esteemed music critics.
The selected music video, “A Lot,” directed by Aisultan Seitov, presents a solemn exploration of both victory and adversity. The video functions as a six-minute microcosm of a Bergmanesque drama, wherein a family gathers to commemorate a life lost, yet beneath the surface of love and laughter lie concealed narratives of ailment, imprisonment, trauma, and sorrow.
Drawing parallels to cinematic inspirations, the article highlights that Seitov integrated elements reminiscent of the vintage aesthetic found in the Polish drama “Cold War,” as well as a nod to “The Godfather.” Notably, the closing scenes draw from this inspiration, depicting the familial patriarch, portrayed by 21 Savage, solitary amid the gathering.
Aisultan Seitov shared insights into the video’s creation process, recounting a pivotal decision shaped by cinematic history. “During a brief 15-minute break, I contemplated the scene for the final verse. I determined to recreate the ambiance from ‘Godfather II,’ a moment where a young Al Pacino sits alone at a table, a solitary figure,” Seitov recounted in conversation with Genius.
This recognition arrives on the heels of Seitov’s earlier accomplishments. In June, his debut film “QASH” (Run) secured the Best Director Award at the 25th Shanghai International Film Festival, further solidifying his presence within the realm of visual storytelling.
