Ne Zha 2, the Chinese animated film that has earned $2.11 billion globally, is set to release an English-dubbed version with well-known voice talent. This move aims to expand its international reach after its record-breaking success in China. The film is already showing on 1,000 screens in North America and 162 in Australia, with plans for a larger marketing campaign, including TV ads and social media outreach.
The film has also made waves in Europe, becoming the highest-grossing Chinese film there in 20 years. Cedric Behrel, managing director of Trinity CineAsia, noted its success in London’s prestigious Odeon Leicester Square, a venue typically reserved for major Hollywood films.
Premium format screenings have been a key factor in the film’s success, with 33% of ticket sales in the UK and 24% in Germany coming from these formats.
Directors Huang Jianxin and Andrew Lau discussed the balance of technology and storytelling in modern filmmaking. While Huang emphasized using AI to enhance viewer experience, Lau argued that story and script are paramount.
With continued global interest in Chinese films, industry leaders are optimistic about the future. CMC Pictures’ Catherine Ying concluded, “The returns could be enormous.”
