Tomas Alfredson, renowned for directing films like “Let The Right One In” and “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy,” is set to adapt the 2000 cinematic masterpiece “Faithless” into a limited TV series. The original film was helmed by Liv Ullmann, featuring a script penned by the legendary Oscar winner Ingmar Bergman.
The upcoming TV series, penned by Sara Johnsen (known for “July 22”), will delve into the narrative of love and infidelity depicted in the initial movie. The story revolves around actress Marianne Vogler, wed to the esteemed conductor Markus Vogler, who embarks on an illicit affair with her husband’s closest friend, David Howard. However, this series will not only retell their story but will extend the timeline by 40 years, revealing the aftermath of their actions on themselves and their families. The show will seamlessly traverse between the contemporary era and the events that transpired four decades earlier.
Lena Endre will reprise her role as Marianne in the series, while Jesper Christensen (recognized from “Quantum of Solace”) will portray the older David Howard. The younger version of David will be embodied by Gustav Lindh (from “Queen of Hearts”). Playing the young Marianne is Frida Gustavsson (of “The Witcher”), and the young Markus will be brought to life by August Wittgenstein (known for “The Crown”).
The production of “Faithless” is a collaboration between Fremantle’s Miso Film Sweden and public broadcasters SVT and ARTE.
The filming of the six-episode series, helmed by Alfredson, has commenced, with an anticipated debut scheduled for early 2023. Fremantle will oversee global distribution and sales.
Tomas Alfredson’s earlier work, the 2012 adaptation of John le Carré’s Cold War classic “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy,” featuring performances by Gary Oldman and Colin Firth, earned a BAFTA for best-adapted screenplay and secured three Oscar nominations. His international breakthrough came through the 2008 vampire drama “Let the Right One In.”
Alfredson’s recent endeavors include the critically acclaimed true-crime drama “The Investigation,” a 6-part series for HBO Max, produced by Miso Film. The production company’s portfolio encompasses projects such as the Danish Netflix sci-fi series “The Rain” and the crime-centered show “Those Who Kill.”
