Cornell University has canceled R&B artist Kehlani’s scheduled performance at its annual Slope Day celebration on May 7, 2025, due to backlash over her outspoken support for Palestinian rights. University President Michael I. Kotlikoff cited concerns that Kehlani’s pro-Palestinian views were perceived as antisemitic and divisive, particularly referencing her 2024 music video “Next 2 U,” which featured Palestinian imagery and the phrase “Long live the intifada” .
The decision followed a petition from the student group Cornellians for Israel, which garnered over 5,000 signatures and raised more than $28,000 to fund an alternative performer. Kehlani has remained vocal in her support for Palestine, acknowledging the professional losses she’s endured for her stance, including dropped brand deals, but reaffirmed her commitment to advocacy .
This incident highlights the ongoing debate over free speech, artistic expression, and political activism in academic and public spaces, particularly amid heightened tensions on U.S. campuses since the October 2023 Israel-Gaza conflict .
