Joseph Kosinski, the director behind Top Gun: Maverick, is set to helm a remake of the iconic 1980s TV series Miami Vice for Universal Pictures.
The screenplay for the remake is being adapted by Dan Gilroy, known for Nightcrawler and The Bourne Legacy. While plot details are currently under wraps, the film will be based on the original series, which starred Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas as undercover detectives in South Florida. The neon-lit show aired on NBC from 1984 to 1989. A previous attempt to bring Miami Vice to the big screen was made in 2006, starring Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell, with Michael Mann, who produced the original series, directing. Although the film became a cult favorite, it was considered a box office disappointment, grossing $165 million against a reported $135 million budget.
Casting for the new film has not yet been announced. In addition to directing, Kosinski will produce through his production company, Monolith. Dylan Clark, who collaborated with Kosinski on Oblivion and the Planet of the Apes series, will also produce through Dylan Clark Productions. Universal’s Sara Scott will oversee the project on behalf of the studio.
Kosinski, who led Top Gun: Maverick to nearly $1.5 billion at the global box office, will next release F1, a racing drama starring Brad Pitt. He is also directing a UFO conspiracy thriller for Apple before diving into the Miami Vice project. Kosinski’s previous works include Tron: Legacy, Only the Brave, and Spiderhead.
