Renowned American musical ensemble, Wilco, is set to embark on their first Australian tour in more than a decade. With a legacy spanning over 30 years, Wilco has firmly established themselves as one of America’s premier musical acts, known for their dedication to traditional songcraft and an ever-evolving sonic exploration.
Their live performances have garnered acclaim, leaving a lasting impression on those who witnessed their last Australian visit in 2013. Since then, fans Down Under have eagerly awaited their return, while the band continued to release albums and embark on numerous tours worldwide.
The wait is finally over as Wilco will grace the East Coast of Australia with their presence in March. The tour will include performances at theaters, concert halls, and the iconic Sydney Opera House.
Frontman Jeff Tweedy expressed his excitement about the upcoming tour, stating, “How is it possible that it’s been over 10 years since Wilco was last down under!? Mind-blowing. So we’re beyond thrilled to be able to say we’re coming back. We love Australia and can’t wait!”
During their absence from the Australian stage, Wilco has released four albums: “Star Wars,” “Schmilco,” “Ode To Joy,” and “Cruel Country.” They are set to release their latest album, titled “Cousin,” later this month. Produced by Welsh musician Cate Le Bon, this album marks Wilco’s first collaboration with an external producer since “A Ghost Is Born” in 2004. It promises to deliver a significant evolution in the group’s sound.
The lead single from the upcoming album, ‘Evicted,’ hints at another subtle transformation in Wilco’s musical journey. Throughout their illustrious career, the band has ventured into various genres, including alt-country, folk, experimental jamming, eclectic indie rock, and more.
Wilco’s live performances are known for their outstanding musicianship, featuring the searing fretwork of lead guitarist Nels Cline, the solid rhythms of Glenn Kotche and John Stirratt, the multi-instrumental talents of Mikael Jorgensen and Patrick Sansone, and the engaging stage presence of Jeff Tweedy.
For ardent Wilco fans, this tour is a must-see event. If you haven’t experienced their tour documentary “Ashes of American Flags” or relished in their live album “Kicking Television,” you might be missing out on an essential part of the Wilco experience.
Joining Wilco on all tour dates, except the Sydney Opera House performance, will be the Western Australia-born singer-songwriter Leah Senior. Known for her distinctive blend of ’70s-inspired Australiana folk and baroque pop, Leah Senior’s live performances are known to captivate audiences. Fans have ample time to acquaint themselves with her latest album, “The Music That I Make,” before she takes the stage in March.
