Greta Gerwig’s film “Barbie” has achieved a remarkable milestone by grossing $626 million at the domestic box office, surpassing Marvel’s 2012 blockbuster, “The Avengers,” which earned $623 million. This achievement now places “Barbie” as the 11th-highest grossing release in the history of domestic box office records.
To break into the coveted top 10, “Barbie” will need to outperform several iconic films, including 2015’s “Jurassic World” (ranked 10th with $653 million), “Titanic” (9th with $674 million), “Avengers: Infinity War” (8th with $678 million), and “Avatar: The Way of Water” (7th with $684 million). It’s important to note that these box office figures have not been adjusted for inflation.
“Barbie” has already secured its position as the highest-grossing domestic release of the year. The film, known for its vibrant and whimsical visual style, has garnered an impressive $1.4 billion globally. Several weeks ago, it outpaced “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” ($1.35 billion) to become the top-grossing worldwide release of 2023. Currently, it stands as the 14th-highest-grossing global release of all time, trailing behind “Frozen II” ($1.453 billion) and “Top Gun: Maverick” ($1.495 billion).
The success story of “Barbie” began in July when it embarked on its record-breaking theatrical journey, debuting with an astonishing $162 million, marking the largest opening of the year. The film maintained its dominance, holding the top spot at the box office for four consecutive weekends and remaining in the top five for over two months. Notably, “Barbie” also achieved the distinction of securing the biggest opening weekend for a film directed by a woman and became the highest-grossing movie directed solely by a woman. Greta Gerwig co-wrote the screenplay for the film alongside Noah Baumbach.
The cast of “Barbie” features Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, portraying the iconic characters of Barbie and Ken, who venture beyond their seemingly perfect world to confront the complexities of real-life experiences. The ensemble cast includes America Ferrera, Issa Rae, Will Ferrell, Kate McKinnon, Simu Liu, and Michael Cera.
