Prepare for an adventure at Camp Half-Blood as a tantalizing teaser for the upcoming series “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” has been unveiled.
The teaser, which can be viewed below, commences in a manner reminiscent of the first book, “The Lightning Thief.” It introduces us to Percy Jackson (played by Walker Scobell) during a school field trip to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in Manhattan. As the teaser unfolds, it delves into Percy’s everyday struggles, including encounters with bullies, academic challenges, and a creative visual portrayal of his dyslexia. Soon, the young demigod finds himself under attack by a fury (portrayed by Megan Mullally).
Percy’s mother intervenes, revealing the startling truth: “The stories that I have told you about Greek gods and half-bloods — they are real.”
Throughout the teaser, flashes from Percy’s quest to recover the stolen Master Bolt are interspersed, offering glimpses of locales such as Waterland, the River Styx, and the Underworld itself. Brief glimpses of key characters, including Annabeth (played by Leah Sava Jeffries), Zeus (Lance Reddick), and Ares (Adam Copeland), also make appearances.
The teaser culminates with Percy facing off against a minotaur in the rain, with his mother urging him, “You’re gonna need to be brave now.” He then activates his sword and charges into the impending battle.
The series is an adaptation of Rick Riordan’s immensely popular “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” book series, which debuted in 2005 with “The Lightning Thief.” Despite previous film adaptations starring Logan Lerman, Riordan assured fans that the forthcoming streaming series is the faithful adaptation they’ve longed for.
“We have been involved in the series since its inception, since the very, very earliest conversations about what a new Percy adaptation might look like, how it would be sketched out, whether it would be episodic,” Riordan disclosed to EW. “So, I feel comfortable telling fans of the books who have been waiting — in some cases, decades — for this kind of faithful adaptation, that this is the one you’ve been waiting for. We are involved, and I think you’re gonna love it.”
The series is set to debut on Disney+ on December 20th, with the first two episodes, written by Rick Riordan and Jon Steinberg and directed by James Bobin, premiering simultaneously. Subsequent episodes will be released weekly following the initial two-episode launch.
