Taylor Swift’s big year continues with a leading 20 nominations for the 2023 Billboard Music Awards, followed by SZA and Morgan Wallen, who each have 17 nominations in a total of 16 categories.
Other stars with a strong showing in the BBMAs nominations include The Weeknd, who’s up for 16 awards with 17 nominations, Drake, who’s up for 14 awards, and first-time finalist Zach Bryan, who has 14 nominations in 13 categories.
The winners of the data-driven awards will be announced on 19 November. It has already been announced that this year’s show will not have a traditional broadcast component, with the awards and performances (which have yet to be announced) being broadcast on Billboard and the BBMAs social channels.
Swift has won the most Billboard Music Awards of all time with 29. With 20 chances to win this year, she has a good chance of surpassing Drake’s all-time record, as she currently only needs to win five of the 20 to set the new high. But with Drake also in contention this year with 14 nominations, Swift may need a few more than five to overtake him.
The 2023 Billboard Music Awards will be produced by Dick Clark Productions.
The accolades will be awarded based on quantitative factors “determined by year-end performance metrics on the Billboard charts” for a period that began on 19 November 2022 and ended on 21 October 2023. There’s a gap between award years; the last BBMAs took place about a year and a half earlier, in a ceremony hosted by Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs and broadcast on NBC from the MGM Grand Garden Arena on 15 May 2022.
Nine new categories were added this year: Top Hot 100 Songwriter, Top Hot 100 Producer, Top Rock Duo/Group, Top Global K-Pop Artist, Top K-Pop Tour, Top K-Pop Album, Top Global K-Pop Song, Top Afrobeats Artist and Top Afrobeats Song.
