“Shadow and Bone” and “Glamorous”, as well as adult animated series “Agent Elvis”, “Farzaar” and “Captain Fall”, will not be returning for new seasons on Netflix, Variety has confirmed.
The announcement comes as Hollywood streamers and networks continue to assess the impact of work stoppages caused by the months-long WGA and SAG-Aftra strikes. According to sources, Netflix’s decision to cancel was based on a number of reasons, including performance and the impact of the strikes, as the industry evaluates production schedules and scheduling shifts.
As Netflix has said about previous cancellations, the streamer continues to look at viewership versus cost when evaluating shows. In the case of series such as Agent Elvis, Glamorous, Farzaar and Captain Fall, each show only ran for one season before being cancelled. Shadow and Bone, on the other hand, was cancelled after its second season, which arrived on the streamer in March.
Based on the Grishaverse novels by Leigh Bardugo, Netflix’s adaptation follows Alina Sarkoff as she struggles with her sudden transition from orphan to saviour of Ravka. It’s worth noting that Netflix still decided to cancel the series, despite the fact that the show attracted a sizable audience and spawned a video game franchise.
The fantasy series’ second season, however, failed to pick up the same momentum as its first, spending five weeks in Netflix’s top 10 English-language TV charts without reaching number one.
On the animation side, “Captain Fall” was originally picked up for 20 episodes to be aired in two parts in its first season. Netflix cancelled the animation after the first part failed to deliver the large audience needed to move the series forward.
Despite the cancellations of other popular animated series such as “Disenchantment”, “Inside Job”, “Q Force” and “Big Mouth” (which will end with season 8, scheduled for sometime in 2024), Netflix continues to invest in adult animation with former HBO Max executive Billy Wee as head of animation.
On the other hand, this year Netflix has ordered renewals for “One Piece”, “Ginny & Georgia”, “Outer Banks”, “The Lincoln Lawyer”, “XO, Kitty”, “Heartstopper”, “The Night Agent”, “The Diplomat”, “FUBAR”, “Sweet Magnolias” and “Castlevania: Nocturne”.
