Neve Campbell has shared her thoughts on the current ‘Scream’ franchise, after deciding not to appear in the sixth instalment, which was released in March this year, due to a pay dispute.
Speaking at a spotlight panel at the Monster-Mania Con in early November, Campbell told the audience that she had watched Scream 6 a few weeks before her appearance at the convention.
“It took me a minute, I don’t know why,” she said. “I actually thought they did a really good job. I think the cast are really strong, wonderful actors.”
Campbell added: “I don’t wish these films ill. I wanted the film to be good. It’s not like I’m sitting in my house going, ‘I hope it sucks, I hope it doesn’t do well’. I care about all the people involved. There’s somebody at the top who’s only thinking about money, and that’s their prerogative. But for the rest of them, everybody else, I care that these films are good.
Campbell also reflected on her experience working on 2022’s “Scream 5” and how she was “so sad about Dewey’s death”.
“I thought it was tragic, and I don’t usually like to criticise the writing in these projects,” Campbell said. “But I was really disappointed in their decision to get rid of David [Arquette]. Dewey is such a wonderful character and I think we all fell in love with him and I think we all felt pretty sad about it. Which of course is why they do it, because it has more impact, but now I miss him. I want to see more of him.
Back in June 2022, Campbell announced her decision not to reprise her role as Sidney Prescott in ‘Scream 6’ because she felt “the offer I was given was not commensurate with the value I brought to the franchise”.
Melissa Barrera, who co-starred with Jenna Ortega in the fifth and sixth Scream films, was recently dropped from the upcoming seventh instalment due to social media posts about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
