Lena Dunham and her husband Luis Felber have co-created a romantic comedy series called “Too Much” for Netflix. Megan Stalter and Will Sharpe are set to star.
“Too Much” follows Jessica (Stalter), a New York workaholic in her mid-30s who is reeling from a broken relationship she thought would last forever and is slowly isolating everyone she knows. With every block in New York telling a story of her own bad behaviour, the only solution is to take a job in London, where she plans to live a life of solitude like a Brontë sister. But when she meets Felix (Sharpe) – who is less Hugh Grant in Notting Hill and more Hugh Grant’s drunken flatmate – she finds that their unusual connection is impossible to ignore, even if it creates more problems than it solves. Now they have to ask themselves: Do Americans and Brits really speak the same language? The series is an ex-pat romance for the disillusioned, wondering if true love is still possible, but desperately hoping it is.
The official character description says: “If you’d met Jessica ten years ago, you’d have been blinded by her inner light – but life took her on a walkabout when she thought she was just going for a quick jog. Felix upends all her expectations, but it turns out that trusting someone is scarier than not trusting anyone. Felix is a very different kind of 35 – eternally 18, dressed like a punk elf, running as fast as he can from a trauma he can’t name, sleeping with every woman who stays in the bar past closing time and waking up wondering why he can’t just enjoy a night alone. Born in England and raised between English boarding schools and his extended family in Japan, he feels neither here nor there. His only comfort is making music – music that no one listens to.
Dunham writes and directs Too Much, which features original music by Felber. Dunham and Felber executive produce alongside Tim Bevan, Eric Fellner, Michael P. Cohen, Surian Fletcher-Jones and Bruce Eric Kaplan, with Camilla Bray serving as producer. The 10-episode series is from Universal International Studios’ Working Title Television and Dunham’s Good Thing Going banner.
“Too Much” will be the first series created by Dunham since “Camping”, which ran for one season on HBO in 2018. Dunham is best known as the creator and star of HBO’s “Girls,” which ran for six seasons from 2012 to 2017. In 2022, Dunham wrote and directed the films “Sharp Stick” and “Catherine Called Birdy”.
Stalter is best known for playing Kayla in the Max comedy ‘Hacks’, with other credits including the 2023 films ‘Cora Bora’, ‘Please Don’t Destroy: The Treasure of Foggy Mountain” and “Sometimes I Think About Dying”. She is also a touring stand-up comedian and is known for her online comedy content. Stalter is repped by UTA, Entertainment 360, Narrative and Jackoway Austen Tyerman.
Sharpe recently starred as Ethan Spiller in HBO’s The White Lotus. He has also starred in BBC One’s Casualty, BBC Two and Netflix’s Giri/Haji and Channel 4’s Flowers, which he also created and directed. His other writing and directing projects include HBO and Sky’s Landscapers and Amazon and StudioCanal’s The Electrical Life of Louis Wain. Sharpe is repped by UTA, Independent Talent Group and Artist Rights Group.
