The 44th London Critics’ Circle Film Awards nominations were unveiled, spotlighting Andrew Haigh’s “All of Us Strangers” at the forefront with nine nominations, closely followed by Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” with seven nods.
Notably, Celine Song’s “Past Lives,” Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Poor Things,” and Jonathan Glazer’s “The Zone of Interest” have each earned six nominations, while Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” secured five.
These acclaimed films contend for the prestigious Film of the Year title, alongside Justine Triet’s “Anatomy of a Fall,” Alexander Payne’s “The Holdovers,” Todd Haynes’ “May December,” and Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon.” Acting honors are also up for grabs, featuring esteemed cast members Andrew Scott, Paul Giamatti, Cillian Murphy, Lily Gladstone, Sandra Hüller, Greta Lee, and Emma Stone from these nominated films.
Jeffrey Wright, recognized this year as the lead actor in “American Fiction,” will receive the esteemed Dilys Powell Award for Excellence in Film, the highest honor bestowed by the London Critics’ Circle.
The nominations were announced during a special event hosted by actors Jing Lusi and Ényì Okoronkwo at London’s May Fair Hotel. The awards ceremony, scheduled for February 4, 2024, will be hosted by critic Mark Kermode at the same venue.
Rich Cline, chair of the Critics’ Circle Film Section, expressed enthusiasm about honoring Jeffrey Wright and teased another special award to be revealed soon. He highlighted the distinctive approach of the Critics’ Circle Awards, stating, “Our nominees stand out from other awards because our members actually take the time to watch all of the year’s films. So these nominations represent a cross-section of the very best movies we saw in 2023. Instead of being critical, it’s nice to celebrate films, filmmakers, and performances that deserve attention.”
The 44th London Critics’ Circle Film Awards are determined by the 210-member film section of the Critics’ Circle, the UK’s oldest critics’ organization. Eligibility is granted to films released in cinemas or on premiere streaming platforms between mid-February 2023 and mid-February 2024.
