Warner Bros. and DC Studios’ “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” surged to the top of the worldwide box office, boasting a remarkable debut weekend of $108 million, according to figures disclosed by Comscore.
The aquatic sequel also dominated the U.S. box office charts, maintaining its supremacy over the weekend.
Following closely in second place, “Wonka” continued its impressive performance, accumulating a weekend tally of $50.9 million globally and achieving an impressive overall sum of $247 million.
Emerging in the third spot was the Indian action spectacle “Salaar Part 1 – Ceasefire,” featuring Prabhas of “Baahubali” fame and helmed by director Prashant Neel from “K.G.F.” The film made a notable debut with $39 million globally, including a substantial $5.5 million from its North American release, securing the third position in that market as well.
Additionally, the Indian immigration-themed comedy-drama “Dunki,” starring Bollywood icon Shah Rukh Khan and directed by Rajkumar Hirani of “3 Idiots” and “PK” fame, claimed the fourth position, amassing $22.9 million over the weekend and reaching a total of $23.8 million since its premiere on Thursday, December 21.
While Christmas Day in India is a public holiday, it may not be as dominant a festival as in Western countries. However, box office figures for “Salaar” and “Dunki” are expected to soar on Monday as cinemas continue their operations.
Closing in at fifth place was the well-received animated feature “Migration,” accruing $20.2 million over the weekend and holding a cumulative total of $34.2 million after two weekends in theaters.
Meanwhile, the Chinese crime drama “Endless Journey,” which previously dominated the mainland China box office, secured the sixth spot globally, adding $15 million over the weekend and amassing a cumulative total of $59.6 million.
Disney’s “Wish” retained its seventh position, raking in an additional $10.7 million and reaching a global total of $144.2 million.
Internationally, the epic Korean naval battle film “Noryang: Deadly Sea,” the latest installment in Kim Han-min’s trilogy following “The Admiral: Roaring Currents” and “Hansan: Rising Dragon,” debuted at number eight, gathering $9.3 million.
“The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes” secured the ninth position with an additional $7 million, resulting in a total haul of $314.4 million.
Lastly, the Korean blockbuster “12.12: The Day” concluded the top 10 list, collecting $6.2 million over the weekend and amassing a cumulative total of $62.8 million.
