The pre-Christmas international box office saw “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” surge to the forefront, marking a robust $108 million debut weekend, topping the worldwide box office as per Comscore’s released figures.
Warner Bros. and DC Studio’s “Aquaman 2” continued its triumph, securing the top spot at the U.S. box office during the weekend.
Following closely, “Wonka” sustained its remarkable performance, amassing $50.9 million globally over the weekend and reaching an impressive cumulative total of $247 million.
The Indian action spectacle “Salaar Part 1 – Ceasefire,” spearheaded by Prabhas from the “Baahubali” series and helmed by “K.G.F.” director Prashant Neel, entered the fray at third place with a commendable $39 million debut. Notably, its North American release garnered $5.5 million, securing the third spot in its opening.
Another Indian feature, the immigration drama-comedy “Dunki,” led by Bollywood luminary Shah Rukh Khan and directed by acclaimed filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani (“3 Idiots,” “PK”), claimed the fourth position with a weekend haul of $22.9 million, accumulating a total of $23.8 million since its launch on Thursday, Dec. 21.
While Monday, Christmas Day, is a public holiday in India, not as widely celebrated as in the West, a surge in numbers is anticipated for “Salaar” and “Dunki” as cinemas continue operating.
Securing the fifth spot, the well-received animated feature “Migration” garnered $20.2 million over the weekend, amassing a total of $34.2 million after two weekends in theaters.
In sixth place globally, the Chinese-made crime drama “Endless Journey” accrued $15 million over the weekend, totaling $59.6 million since its recent opening atop the mainland China box office.
Disney’s “Wish” retained the seventh position, adding $10.7 million to its global earnings, reaching a cumulative total of $144.2 million.
Internationally, the epic Korean naval battle film “Noryang: Deadly Sea,” the third installment in Kim Han-min’s trilogy following “The Admiral: Roaring Currents” and “Hansan: Rising Dragon,” released in Korea at No. 1 on Dec. 20, clinching the eighth position globally with a total of $9.3 million.
“The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes” secured the ninth spot with an addition of $7 million, accumulating $314.4 million overall.
Closing the top 10, the Korean blockbuster “12.12: The Day” fetched $6.2 million, elevating its cumulative earnings to $62.8 million.
